The air was filled with great jocks and great radio voices in the 60's and early 70's, guys like Cousin Brucie, Charlie Greer, Chuck Leonard and Dan Ingram on WABC, Chuck Buell and Kris Eric Stevens on LS, Jack Armstrong on KB in Buffalo (the greatest night jock in the history of top 40 radio) and countless others from CKLW, WOWO, WCFL with Ron Britain, WLAC in Nashville, KIX in Raleigh, WLEE and Go Radio in Richmond. The energy, the jingles, the compression and the reverb seduced Jon at an early age and he became a major pain in everybody's rear at the local radio station where he had to be escorted from the building nearly every evening by his mentor, George Utley. George was the consummate professional with the patience of Job, but wielded an iron fist when it came to FCC rules and regs, diction and enunciation, and the power of timing and running a tight board. It was boot camp and Jon got his ass kicked every night... God bless GU!
Jon's first big break came in High School when he was handed the morning show responsibilities at his home town radio station (no doubt because nobody else on the staff wanted to get up at 4AM.) He'd fire up the AM and FM transmitters, and sit down at the console for 2 hours, spinning top 40 hits and doing features like the "VEPCO Weathergram" and the Farm report before jetting off to class in his vintage, candy apple red '65 Beetle.
After a couple of semesters at VCU in the Engineering Technology program and 3 years as an Army broadcaster with AFRTS in Thailand stationed on the Gulf of Siam with the U.S. Air Force on a B52 bomber base, where he became an avid skydiver and scuba diver, Jon returned to the good old U.S.A. and began his radio and voiceover career all over again, eventually working for such legendary stations as WXLK, WRVQ, KMJK and WRBQ, and as the image voice of WWBT and WBTV television and many radio stations.
His voiceover hero's: James Coburn, Dan Ingram, Ernie Anderson, Percy Rodriguez, and, of course, the great and powerful Oz - Don LaFontaine. Jon's motto: "If you do it right it looks easy."
Jon enjoys riding his Harley, playing golf and spending time on the Piankatank River and Chesapeake Bay with his wife and Labrador Retrievers Hurley and Cameron.
